IronyIrony can be used in many different ways of speech. It can be be used in a figure of speech meaning a person can say something but means another thing. For example in life I'll say "Oh my God it's raining cats and dogs." But really I mean it's raining outside very hard. In the poem "Richard Corey" by Edwin Arlington Robinson is an example of irony. Its an example of irony because in the poem they make him live a good life that everyone wants to live as n his time. Then he shots himself in the head. The author basically was making Richard Cory seem like if he didn't have no problems in life. In the poem it says:
"So on we worked, and waited for the light, The story " The Gift of the Magi" by O. Henry is a ironic story. The story was about a guy named Jim and a girl named Della. They both was trying to impress each other with a Christmas gift. Ironic is important in the story because the girl Della cut her hair off and sold it to buy a watch for Jim.Then towards the end of the story it says Jim sold his watch to impress Della with a set of expensive combs for her long hair. Della had bought the same exact watch that Jim had sold for her combs. When Jim came home , he noticed that Della have cut all her hair off and was surprised. Basically the story have something to do with irony because the both of them bought something they both needed for them self. In the story it says "For there lay The Combs the set of combs, side and back, that Della had worshiped for long in a Broadway window." and "I sold the watch to get the money to buy Your combs. And now suppose you put the chops on". Those statement shows how the irony is important in the story. Irony is important because it is how one person does something to impress the other and that person do something to impress other. But by them both selling something that they own and treasure to get what is needed for the other. They both end up keeping the items not as a Christmas present. In the story " The House that Slaves Built " talks about the black slaves built the White House for their slave owner. The White House was built for the Presidents who were white and had knowledge on how to help the United States. It's ironic how the President now for our country is Barack Obama and he's an African American. In The year 1801 after the White House was opened, Thomas Jefferson was President came the White House with more then 10 slaves in his Home. The White House was built by a black slaves. Now after more then 200 years later Barack Obama is the President of the United States. Barack Obama and his family is making this a powerful symbol of change in the United States. The story " The House that Slaves built " basically has something to do with irony because the White house was built for the white people as president even though the black slaves built it. Now theres a black president in our time named Barack Obama. His wife background has slavery in it while Barack Obama doesn't. But his wife history doesn't say her family helped build the White House. Some cartoons or comic books have irony in it too. I choose a cartoon image called " Batman meets bat as man ". That image has irony in it because there's a boy that wants to dress up like a bat and theres a bat that want to dress up like a boy. Irony plays a big part of life. Sometimes i wonder what would life be like if irony wasn't here. Based on from the stories irony can be explained in many ways even if it doesn't explains it clearly. Irony to me basically is something that was meant to happen or something you didn't expect to see happen. The story " The House that Slaves Built " and " Batman meets bat as man " is kind of similar. They both explains something other people wasn't expecting to see or happen. Both these stories explains irony in it. That's why i say irony is a big part of life.
